Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System Receives National Award for Sustainability and Waste Reduction

Partner Recognition Award

MONTGOMERY – In recognition for achievements in sustainability and waste reduction, Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS) has received a Partner Recognition Award from Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in health care. The award is one of the Environmental Excellence Awards given each year to honor environmental achievements in the health care sector.

“As health care providers, sustainability is at the core of our healing mission and central to protecting the health of our Veterans, staff and community,” said CAVHCS Director Dr. Linda Boyle.  “We are thankful for this distinguished recognition from Practice Greenhealth; and we are looking forward to making our practices even more sustainable.”

The award is given to health care facilities that are changing their practices to become more sustainable and have achieved progress in areas such as waste reduction, renewable energy adoption, food purchasing and mercury elimination. They also must have a recycling rate of at least 10 percent for their entire waste stream.

CAVHCS has been instrumental in diverting 695.4 tons of non-hazardous solid waste - for example, wood, glass, etc., and 283,000 pounds of paper from landfills – that is a 15 percent increase over calendar year 2016. CAVHCS’ recycling efforts last year reduced greenhouse gas emissions by about 2447 metric tons of carbon equivalent (MTCE), equivalent to taking 1889 cars off the road per year, conserving 1,009,626 gallons of gasoline or 48 railway cars of coal. By reducing air and water pollution, and saving energy, recycling offers an important environmental benefit – by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and chlorofluorocarbons, that contribute to a healthy environment.

“CAVHCS is committed to quality health care and maintaining an environmentally friendly medical facility,” said CAVHCS Assistant Director Thomas Huettemann. “It is essential to work with community partners such as Practice Greenhealth to help achieve excellent results.”

The award was presented at the Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Awards Gala, in May in San Diego at the conclusion of the CleanMed Conference & Exhibition.
