CAVHCS' Audiology Department has clinics at two campuses, Montgomery and Tuskegee. the department employs 6 full-time staff audiologists; two Audiologists are located at Montgomery campus and four Audiologists at Tuskegee. Audiology services consist of diagnostic testing for hearing loss and tinnitus. Aural rehabilitation services include hearing aids, FM systems, assistive listening devices (ALDs) and individual and group counseling. Students participate in the trainee program at the Montgomery campus. Over 1600 veterans are seen yearly in the audiology department at CAVHCS West. The veteran population is diverse, ranging in age from 18 through 90 with various degrees and configuration of hearing loss. This aspect provides trainees with a broad experience in fitting and programming different models and brands of hearing aids.
Under the direction of the VA staff Audiologist, the trainee will perform the following:
- Observe, assist, and perform audiology procedures for issuing hearing aids to the veteran population.
- As the trainee gains working knowledge of aural rehabilitation techniques, he or she will conduct "hearing aid class" under supervision.
- Trainee will assist veterans in insertion, removal, and instruction of care of hearing aids.
- Trainee will program hearing aids and modify shells and molds as needed.
- Trainee will perform hearing aid checks, thus trouble shooting hearing aids in need of repair.
- Provide quality, compassionate health care to veterans receiving audiology services.
Qualifications and Training Required:
Must be enrolled in accredited university program for Speech and Hearing sciences.
Completion of minimum of (1) undergraduate class in the science of audiology prior to offsite practicum.
Performance Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on performance.
