CAVHCS Pharmacy Service serves as an advanced practice experience rotation site for fourth year pharmacy students and as a rotation site for early pharmacy practice experience for second year pharmacy students.
Rotation Descriptions:
Primary Care
CAVHCS Pharmacy Service has up to six Primary Care Rotations available per block. The primary care rotations are located in Montgomery, Tuskegee, or Columbus. The students will progress to independently managing pharmacist-run clinics, including anticoagulation, lipid, and diabetes dyslipidmia clinics. This will include:
interviewing and counseling patients
making appropriate pharmacotherapy interventions
providing accurate and concise documentation in the patient's electronic medical record
In addition to managing pharmacist-run clinics, students will be given an opportunity to:
- improve their primary care disease-state knowledge base (A-fib, Hyperlipidemia, DM, HTN, CHF, Depression, etc.) focusing on optimizing pharmacotherapy
- round with various primary care services, including geriatrics, mental health, and cardiology
- perform Home Based Primary Care chart reviews and MUEs
- respond to drug-information questions and pharmacotherapy consults
Health Systems Practice
CAVHCS Pharmacy Service offers one Health Systems Practice rotation per block located at the Montgomery Campus. The student will actively be involved in:
preparing IVs
working with Pyxis and BCMA delivery systems
performing pharmacokinetic dosing of antibiotics
adjusting inpatient medications for renal impairment
participate in rounds by making pharmacotherapy recommendations
lead disease state discussion pertaining to inpatient issues and answer drug information questions
Drugs Information:
CAVHCS Pharmacy Service has one Drug Information Rotation per block split between Tuskegee and Montgomery Campuses. In addition to serving as the contact for all facility drug information questions, students will actively participate in:
P&T Committee Meetings including preparing the agenda, generating reports, etc
completing various MUEs focusing on safety efficacy,and cost reduction topics
participate in research projects resulting in poster publications and journal publications
Electives
CAVHCS Pharmacy Service offers both a Pharmacy Administrative and Pharmacy IT rotation per block. The administrative rotation will involve shadowing the Pharmacy Chief and understanding VA leadership responsibilities. The IT rotations will focus on pharmacy's role in:
