Recreation Therapy students interested in interning at Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System will have the opportunity to intern under a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist focusing on the following programs: Extended Care Services (Community Living Center, Rehabilitation, and Pain Management Program), Inpatient Substance Abuse, Homeless Domiciliary, Day Treatment Program, and Inpatient Mental Health.
As a Recreation Therapy Intern, the student will be placed under thet direct supervision of a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. Intern student will be rotated through all patient population areas. Weekly supervision meetings are scheduled within the first week of start date to ensure communication is kept at an optimal level and provide an opportunity for processing learning experiences.
The direct supervision enables students to have an exceptional learning experience in the program areas. The primary responsibilities of interns would be in the area of direct patient care. Students will become competent at completing computerized comprehensive recreation therapy assessments, treatment plans, progress notes and discharge summaries on each patient assigned to his/her caseload. They will learn how to effectively work as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team involved in clinical patient care. The internship is designed to be progressive in nature, challenging interns, but flexible to meet the individual's and university needs. In addition to direct patient care responsibilities, students will be included in all Recreation Therapy Service programs, including but not limited to, total quality improvement, volunteer, community and public relations, special event programming, service management within CAVHCS. At the completion of the internship, students will have acquired the knowledge, skills and abilities for practicing therapeutic recreation as an entry level therapist.
As a recreation therapy intern, he/she will be responsible for compliance with all VA and Federal Regulations, as well as those outlined by the university. Generally, interns will be responsible for the completion of a special project as deemed appropriate by the student, intern supervisor, and the faculty advisor. The project should benefit the agency and the intern alike and can include a wide variety of aspects such as research, community resource identification, website development, and programmatic ideas and assessment.
